A traditional technique commonly utilized in Traditional Chinese Medicine and found historically used across a variety of cultures. Modern day cupping involves the use of small glass, silicone or plastic cups to form a suction on the skin. The suction created by the cups pulls the superficial layers of skin and muscle away from the body, increasing the flow of energy, blood and lymph, while releasing toxicity and pain. The practitioner may place the cups for up to 10 minutes in stationary position or with addition of oil the cups may be slid across fleshy areas, such as the back or thighs.Cupping is utilized for treatment of pain, lung diseases and other disorders. Cupping generally feels like a deep massage and is enjoyed by patients for its ability to release tension in myofascial tissue. The discoloration left behind by the cups is considered more of a hickey than a bruise because there is no pain in area of discoloration. The discoloration dissipates within a few days. Your Acupuncturist recognizes this discoloration as a sign of existing ‘blood stagnation’ (poor circulation) and the use of the cups allows for the removal of the stagnation from the area. Follow-up cupping sessions should result in lessening of discoloration as the stagnation is resolved and energy balance is established in the area.
